Im the original designer of the chaboo and leader of this crazy project. A furniture designer/builder who through strokes of fate and love works alot with bamboo poles (www.bamboodna.com) and bamboo plywood. I like to explore the boundaries of design through highly experimental projects and radical visions. Yes, Im a bit crazy and its not the easiest nor efficient way to make a living. I love the challenge and excitement that comes with doing something that is simply really cool.
I have some big ideas of how the world works and how it relates to my business. Feeling good about what I do and how I do it is a simple principle that seems to work for me. I like to look at the big picture, treat everyone the same, have fun, and have faith that if you do that everything will be ok.
And I also like okapis. Ever seen those?
Strangely enough I am participating in this reinterpretation project of my own design. So here is my statement against the chaboo.
I wanted to contrast the strict geometry and linear quality of my original design by using the irregular line of the natural edge. The bamboo ply that I so often use is essentially a natural irregular material- bamboo, machined down and glued up forcing it into a linear form. As a statement against that I hand milled an irregular slab of bubinga with a Japanese hand plane and scrapers. The surface is left rough.
It was a good experience for me to depart from what I usually do. Id like to make a series of half natural edge chaboos in different woods, carefully choosing what edges I use to create original compositions resulting from the material at hand.
