I live in Portland where I design and build custom furniture. The foundation for my work comes from two years study under master craftsman James Krenov at the College of the Redwoods Fine Woodworking program. I place a high value on quality craftsmanship and the connection one must have with their work to produce good results. My furniture is ever changing, reflecting a desire for growth and discovery. I also find inspiration from my peers and the clients I work with. This project is a perfect example of the great work happening in Portland that feeds the rest of us.
What interests me about an ebonized surface is that it actually highlights grooves and angles that would be lost in lighter material. My goal was to use the same form as the original, but create new shapes using the effect of light on dark. A walk around the piece will reveal new shapes from different light sources. This piece will not be for sale in the show, but will be donated to the upcoming Ethiopian Orphan Relief Auction. Learn more at www.ethiopianorphanrelief.org
