Ciclismo Design started because once woodworking had become my career I needed a hobby. I turned back to one of my early interests, bicycles. Living now in Portland didn't hurt either as the city obviously embraces the bicycle culture. I quickly learned about vintage road bikes, whats good, bad and why. I buy, sell, restore, trade and best of all ride vintage lugged steel bikes. I also find great joy in helping friends track down and obtain their own vintage rides and nobody has complained yet. My background as an antique dealer had already given me the skills to look at an object and quickly determine if has the quality of design, construction or ideally both to make it worth buying. This was a very easy and fun transition into the bike arena.
I started a small jewelry business based on 5 vintage cycling medals from the 1920's-30's that I found on Ebay and at my old haunt, the flea market of NYC. These designs and other cool cycling related ideas/products like bike "boxes" made from recycled wine crates are what Ciclismo is about.
This one was a no brainer for me. It's a bicycle repair Chaboo. I already sit around our TV room at night repacking hubs, cleaning, repairing, and just tinkering with bikes and components. This chaboo will be a huge help for me to keep the tools and small parts organized and at hand. The top is made of 1/4" steel plate with a magnetized strip down the middle to help catch loose bearings and other parts that typically like to scatter around a room. The handles are made in part from vintage downtube shifters and the shallow drawer will store items that cant be suspended on the pegboard. I tried to maintain the spirit of the chaboo and while I love the fact that the original can be easily picked up and carted around this one (probably the heaviest in the show) does not allow such luxury...Thanks again to my friend and shopmate Ken Tomita for this exciting and fun opportunity. I've enjoyed meeting the talented artists, designers and craftspeople involved in this project.
