About

On any given week I could be framing an addition, building a set of kitchen cabinets, or remodeling a bathroom. This range of skills has kept me very busy and has given me the opportunity to work for and with some very kind and talented people. Remodeling and the associated carpentry have been the backbone of my business. As a consequence though, my furniture making has slowed to a trickle. I studied furniture and cabinet making in Seattle, and have had some real success selling my pieces. However, the need to run a profitable construction business has forced me to pursue whatever pays. There is an old adage that reads something like “owning my own business gives me the opportunity to work evenings, weekends and holidays for free.” While that’s pretty damn true it’s also given me the opportunity to home birth a beautiful little girl and also put some energy into helping my wife get her kimono business (www.mswood.etsy.com) off the ground.

My Chaboo

When I saw Chaboos start trickling into Kens shop, my interest began to climb and when I saw the number of people getting involved, I decided that I really wanted to take part. Finding the right design posed some distinct challenges for me. I wanted to stay true to Ken’s original design. I feel the size and shape of his Chaboo were very carefully considered. I also needed to be quick to build, with materials on hand, and using tools and techniques I’m familiar with. As I worked through different designs, They all had one problem or another. I finally settled on laminated plywood with a round over to add some additional dimension and enhance the layers of veneer. The holes in the top were also added early in the design process to add some additional interest to the piece. I have to admit, I wasn’t real comfortable with the simplicity of the finished piece at first. Usually my designs are usually quite complicated. Now, sitting here studying it. I’m pleased with my Chaboo. It’s simple, sturdy, elegant, and versatile. A small step toward better design.
